The Day I Met Pope Francis

The world mourned for Pope Francis’ passing into glory on 21st April 2025. World leaders and Christian communities paid tribute to this compassionate, humble, and transformative figure whose unwavering commitment to social justice touched us all.
My thoughts turned to gratitude—for his life and for the unforgettable moment Marlon and I were blessed to spend with him. It was during our third ecumenical trip to Europe last May, a journey that marked the 70th anniversary of Hong Kong Christian Council, that we had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis.
The pilgrimage included stops at key landmarks of church history throughout Europe. In Wittenberg, Germany, for example, we visited the site where Martin Luther presented the Ninety-Five Theses.
The real highlight of the trip however, was a remarkable, unscheduled audience with Pope Francis himself. When he heard of our Hong Kong ecumenical delegation’s visit to the Vatican, he graciously welcomed us. I will always cherish the memory of his warmth—shaking each person’s hand, and his kind, radiant smile.
Pope Francis spoke passionately about unity among Christians, even humorously suggesting putting theologians on an island to allow it to flourish in peace. His words carried a sacred reminder that unity is essential before the Lord’s return. He also touched countless hearts by reminding us to be kind to migrants and refugees, for they are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity. His empathy and wisdom were unparalleled.
Pope Francis departed this world on Easter Monday—a poignant timing that I believe reflects how dearly our Father in Heaven treasures him. While we will miss him greatly, I find comfort in the hope of seeing him again in heaven. Until then, we celebrate his life and his legacy as a humble servant of the Lord.
Let's honour Pope Francis by carrying forward his vision of love, unity, and compassion. Siew Mei
