Love Upgrading

My career at Christian Action began in 1987 with a heavy focus on job training and placements. At first, it was for Vietnamese refugees, then for Hong Kong’s factory workers. Since 1994, Christian Action has been an official partner of the Employees Retraining Board (ERB). We aim to enhance the employability of Hong Kong’s unemployed through vocational training, and therefore help them re-enter the workforce.

In October 2019, ERB launched the Love Upgrading Special Scheme. It was commissioned by the Government to support those who were out of work. This new scheme has expanded its target and now includes those who are underemployed or required to take no-pay leave due to Hong Kong’s economic downturn. Since the programme began, Christian Action has offered 88 courses, covering different industries and areas of vocational skills, such as electrical and mechanical services, beauty therapy and social services.

Sing Praises to the Lord!

When I had my lucid dream in 1993, I understood it as God calling me to save the unwanted babies in China. At that time, I had no important contacts in the mainland and could not read Chinese. Setting up a Christian children’s home in Qinghai seemed to be an impossible dream.

After over 20 years of service, Christian Action now co-manages four children’s homes in Qinghai province, and our child welfare service continues to grow. I am thrilled to tell you that our new Xining Children’s Home (XNCH) opened its doors in December 2020! We should indeed praise the Lord!

Safe against COVID-19

God is helping us through another challenge as the fourth wave of COVID-19 hits Hong Kong. We wanted our vulnerable clients to spend Christmas under a safe roof, and we wanted them to welcome a new year with us.

Home, for most of us, is a haven against the virus, but it is not so for many of our clients. They live in mouldy, cramped subdivided units that are often overcrowded. These risky living areas are a reality for asylum seekers, single parents, young couples, and new arrivals from Mainland China who may not have the luxury of working from home. The outbreak among domestic workers who still frequent populated markets and shops, has added another demographic to this high-risk group.

Valley of the Shadow of Death

“God, what will happen to my wife and my little girl if I die?"

Less than two weeks ago Emmanuel, a courageous member of our Tuen Mun Service Center team, should have died. He’d contracted Covid-19, his body was shutting down and his doctor told him to prepare himself for death. And then God intervened. This is his story.

From the moment Emmanuel arrived at the hospital on December seventh his health began improving. But on December 18 all hell broke loose: his body descended into a “cytokine storm,” wherein his immune system violently attacked his healthy tissues. Doctors cautioned that if his blood oxygen continued to fall, he risked dying from acute respiratory failure.
