When Should You Stop Helping?
Six years ago I lay awake at night vexed by the question : “When should you stop helping?”. The young orphan Ruo Ruo, pictured above, suffered from a life threatening condition that needed immediate attention. She was operated on in Xining. When that failed we flew her to Shanghai. And when that surgery failed we flew her to Hong Kong. My colleagues in other organizations ‘tut-tutted’ the extravagance: all up, by the end of 2003, we had spent HK$ 500,000 to save her life. When should you stop helping?
As the years have passed it’s become increasingly clear that Christian Action’s mission of saving orphans in peril, helping them thrive, and seeing that they have a future surrounded by love is priceless.
Ruo Ruo is now ten years old and thriving. She is living away from the orphanage in a foster family that adores her. She still has a physical disability, which she will have for the rest of her life, but is excelling in every area of life (the certificate in the photograph is a national award for outstanding calligraphy!).
Today I face a new challenge: Christian Action has committed to helping the Qinghai government set up and run an additional seven orphanages and rehabilitation centers by 2011. May I ask you to join us? To pray, fund-raise and volunteer your talents?
God Bless,
Siew Mei
