The Remarkable Work of God in China

In June of this year Marlon and I were blessed to travel in China and witness God’s amazing work. We traveled as part of the Hong Kong Christian Council’s 70th Anniversary delegation and visited the CCC (China Christian Council) and TSPM (Three Self Patriotic Movement), historic churches and seminaries. In addition to seeing the breathtaking things God has accomplished in China, we also learned from our counterparts, who served the Kingdom of God with passion—halleluiah!

Rev. Xu Xiaohong, Chairman of the TSPM National Committee, warmly welcomed us to the Yanjing Theological Seminary in Beijing and discussed with us the topics of the Three-Self Principles and the sinicization of Christianity. In order for the churches in tHK and China to advance, we agreed that we needed to foster understanding between the two regions, in addition to developing Bible college students' intellectual prowess, religious literacy, and sense of social responsibility. What an inspiring first day!

The following day, we visited the prestigious Chongwenmen Church, which is one of the largest Christian Protestant churches in Beijing. The main hall and basement level can accommodate 1,700 people. I can easily picture the powerful worship music ascending to heaven every Sunday. Before we left Beijing, we paid a courtesy visit to the National Religious Affairs Administration (NRAA) headquarters office.

In Shanghai, we met with senior members of the CCC. In this gathering, Rev. Xu reviewed the development process of sinicization after the pandemic, which is a bright path for God's grace to the church in China. We ended the meeting by praying for continued church growth in China. We also visited the stunning Holy Trinity Cathedral, which was constructed and dedicated in 1847. Designed by British Architect Sir George Gilbert Scott in the beautiful Gothic Revival style, this is the oldest Protestant Christian church in Shanghai.

I was particularly struck by our visit to Nanjing's Amity Printing Company, which was founded by Bishop K.H. Ting. This is one of the highest volume Bible printers in the world and the largest in China, having printed over 262 million copies since 1988!

We wrapped up our incredible trip in Guangzhou, where we lunched with Guangdong TSPM and CCC members. The stop helped build closer ties with our nearest neighbour in the Greater Bay area.

My prayer for China is “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew 9:38 NIV

Before returning to Hong Kong, we had the
chance to taste the famous Mou Toi latte
