We Made Grandma Cry!
High on the Tibetan Plateau, in a small brick house in a sparsely populated village surrounded by hills and grassland, a grandmother breaks down and cries. She has few possessions; the house is not hers and there is no electricity supply, but she is so full of gratitude that she bursts into tears. She has seen with her own eyes that her grand daughter, Dou-Ge, who had been given four months to live, is now healthy and happy. Seeing her grandmother cry makes Dou-Ge cry - so it was a very happy homecoming despite the fact that all our help led to a grandma crying!
Cai Dan, the Tibetan interpreter who accompanied Dou-Ge from Huangnan Childrenʼs Home to Hong Kong, remembers that just one month ago, Dou Ge could hardly walk; her complexion was dull, she slept most of the time, and it was plain to all that this was a very sick child. Yet on the return trip she was running in the airport terminal like any healthy 15 year old! “The speed with which she recovered surprised us all; the physical transformation is astounding!” said Cai Dan. “She even has a chubby face now!” added a social worker. “And she even looks prettier!” said her Grandma.
Jiacan, the Director of Huangnan Children’s Home says, “I have learned from Dou Ge’s story that no matter what hardships face us, we have to work together to get them solved. We hope others will come here and get to know more about the Tibetan area and what we are doing. We need more help from others to do our work well. Our children’s hopes, their studies, their all- round development, and most important, their health, should always be our first priority.”
I wholeheartedly agree! The provincial government has asked us to get involved in the care of Qinghai’s 11,000 orphaned children, and we sure can’t handle that challenge without the support of many more caring people like you, so I hope you’ll keep on sharing this blog site with your friends and family members all around the world.
But the last words should be from Dou Ge’s Grandma. It was when she was in the midst of saying the following when she burst into tears of gratitude: “Thank you to Christian Action, the supporters, the Civil Affairs Bureau, Huangnan Children’s Home for their great help and care, and special thanks to Cai Dan, who took great care of Dou Ge when she went to Hong Kong for surgery. I hope all good-heartedness will meet with recompense.” Doesn’t that kind thought make you want to cry?
Have a wonderful week, Siew Mei.
