No Longer A Volunteer

It's not surprising that few skilled people are willing to live and work in remote, undeveloped areas of north western China, at high altitudes, where the weather is often extreme and the amenities we take for granted do not exist.

For a single person in the prime of life there are a lot of challenges, including having a group of friends to have fun with when you’re not at work. Because of all these difficulties in Qinghai, I am very grateful for our newest staff member, Mona Lau.

A year ago, Mona spent the summer doing some volunteer work at Xining Children’s Home. This was part of her internship after completing College.  Earlier this year, armed with a clear vision from the Lord, she joined as a permanent team member, making a minimum commitment of two years.

Mona moved to Qinghai five months ago, and is thoroughly enjoying being a member of the team.  As a fully qualified nurse, she provides much needed training for the local staff at Xining Children’s Home. Many of the staff team have several years of work experience under their belts, but Mona’s assessment is that they still need plenty of training to bring their skills up to the same levels as their counterparts in more developed countries.

To date, she has run courses in Nursing Ethics and Infection Control, and in the next quarter she will be conducting training in Health and Safety, Safeguarding vulnerable children and how to deal with Emergencies.

Mona wants to pay special tribute to volunteer specialists and surgeons. She says, “I am so grateful for the generosity of these visitors who come to Qinghai and time after time accurately identify the urgent needs of the children, where local doctors do not yet have the knowledge to identify those needs.  Additionally, these visitors do not hesitate to create valuable connections through their own medical networks to ensure those needs get met, so our precious children get the best care in the world, the care they deserve!”

Please pray for Mona and all the local staff in our Children’s Homes.  Your financial and prayerful support means that Christian Action can continue to improve the calibre of care that our children receive.
