Found by "An Angel"

I want to tell you about Xiao-Li and her daughter Mei-Mei. They were excited about moving from Sichuan Province to Hong Kong where her husband Cheng-gong lived and worked. Mei-Mei would finally be re-united with her father. They had arranged to meet him outside the train station in Hong Kong but he was late. Xiao-Li checked her cellphone, one voice message: "I'm in trouble, debt up to my eyeballs. I've been evicted. You're on your own, sorry, take care".

They had been elated when Cheng-gong had finally obtained their Hong Kong residency document! Now fear, despair and hopelessness rose up, and all the joy Xiao-Li had felt evaporated. “What to do, where to go?” Tears of shock dissolved her courage and her knees. She collapsed in a heap, dragging Mei-Mei down with her. A passing stranger (we’ll call him ‘An Angel’) found them. After a few gentle questions, he offered her the first lifeline of the day. “Christian Action will help you; their offices are over there.”

Our social workers at the Tin Shui Wai Service Centre were startled by the tearful woman, frightened child and pile of suitcases that materialized out of nowhere. Between sips of warm water (the Hong Kong remedy for all ills)  Xiao-Li told their story. Patiently our staff explained her privileges. Her residency document gave her access to comprehensive social security assistance (CSSA). In the interim, we arranged room and board for the distraught mother and child at a local shelter.

Compassionate locals like ‘The Angel’ are our unofficial community representatives, directing the vulnerable to safety at Christian Action. We connect the needy with government agencies. We also care for children after school. This enables their mothers to work, using skills gained through our training programmes. Those devastated by divorce, abandonment or bereavement are offered our counselling services.

To those that have lost everything, Christian Action shows that there is hope for the future.

I know that Xiao-Li and Mei-Mei would thank you for helping them if you met them today. There are many more families without hope who need your help. Just click the link below and give them help and hope.
