Just do it

I am always amazed at the lengths people go to when they really want to make a difference in the life of someone less fortunate. Kenny Lau, a keen cyclist, is one such person, but he didn't know who to help or where to start. A friend told him about Christian Action and we gladly agreed to partner with Kenny. At last he could start on his adventure!

Kenny planned to raise sponsorship as he circled Taiwan’s main island, which has a coastline of 1,566 km (973 mi). We helped him prepare some promotional materials that outlined his plans, and his motivation. We included a link to our Donate page, making it easy for his friends to fulfill their pledges.

Kenny visited our Mong Kok Service Centre because he is keen to help children living in Hong Kong whose families have migrated from mainland China. The parents work extremely long hours, and have very little community support. Read more about them here. The children immediately warmed to Kenny which was the inspiration he needed to complete his tough ride.

There were quite a few obstacles along the way, but Kenny kept remembering the children. Torrential rain on his fourth day out caused mud slides along the Suhua highway, but Kenny declined advice to give up and get on a train. He negotiated mud slides, steep inclines, roads strewn with rocks and debris, large trucks, and 15 tunnels!   On May 23rd he crossed the finish line that he’d set for himself, completing 1400 km in just 15 days.

Early this month Kenny again visited the children who had inspired him.  He said humbly, “I have come to thank the children and I also want to inspire them to persevere in everything they do.”  After thunderous applause from his young audience, Kenny extended his challenge to the public:  “Think about this trip as an example of what can be done, and then get out there and raise funds for any charity you like, in any way you can think of!”  Kenny reflected Nike’s famous challenge: Just do it!

Donations have reached the HK$100 000 mark, and are still climbing. You can partner with Kenny too, by contributing now.

Hong Kongers can also watch me talk about the work of Christian Action on ATV's Cantonese Channel on Saturday June 23rd at 8:30pm.
