The Red Slippers

The five families already occupying Xin Ning Court, the building housing our new small group homes, mean that what was formerly just a building is now housing a real community of families. Christian Action social workers are still required to make home visits, just as we do with any small group homes. During a recent home visit, one of the mama's was eager to show off some of her 'daughter's' awards...

Hua with her brother and
a sister from her small group
home.

Hua is a typically starry eyed eleven-year-old.  Her affectionate disposition and sunny personality make it a pleasure to share a small group home with her.  It’s easy to see why Mama Jin is so proud of her. She is helpful as she does her chores and looks after the younger children. Hua earned quite a few awards and trophies when she participated in provincial athletics competitions.  She’s not only naturally good at sport, she’s doing very well at school too. She is considered a ‘Three Merit Student’ and outstanding scholar, one of the highest accolades that can be earned in the Chinese school system. In fact, Hua’s certificates fill several drawers!

Perhaps more importantly, Hua is more than just a talented girl. She is also full of kindness and consideration. Mrs. Jin showed me a pretty pair of shoes and told me this story of 'The Red Slippers':

One day while I was finishing off the day’s housework, I felt a gentle pair of arms circling my waist. I turned around to find Hua’s excited little face staring up at me. "Mama, please close your eyes, I have a surprise for you!" Playing along, I complied with this simple request. When I opened my eyes Hua was holding out a pretty pair of red slippers. She said with a giggle, "If you wear these while doing the housework, you will know that I love you, and of course you will be more comfortable too!"

The love shared between this foster mother and daughter melts my heart. As I remember that you have supported Christian Action so that previously unwanted and unloved children like little Hua can see that they are treasured by foster parents like Mama Jin, the emotion in my heart is overwhelming and I am left almost speechless with gratitude for your generosity. Thanks to Jack Yeung and Island Evangelical Community Church’s generous donations, the first five homes were comfortably furnished. With Christmas just a few weeks away, and four new small group homes opening soon, would you consider being a part of making more loving families by giving to our programmes now?
