Canada Expresses Christmas Gratitude
On the night that Jesus was born, angels took the good news first of all to shepherds in the fields. Shepherds were among the lowest on the social scale in that part of the world.
Last Christmas, staff at the Canadian Consulate were the first to play Santa to some of the lowest on the social scale in Hong Kong: refugees and asylum seekers.
Ian Burchett, the Canadian Consul General, said, "We chose to donate food because as Canadians and local Hong Kongers we feel truly privileged to live and to work in this amazing city. We also realize that many people are not as fortunate as us. Christmas is a time to remember others and their needs. It is a time to be generous in spirit and to be thankful."
Gloria Ko, Head of the International Organization for Migration had told Mr. Burchett about the work of Christian Action. He said, "Refugees and asylum seekers temporarily residing in Hong Kong are some of the most deserving members of our local community. They have left their homeland to seek a better future. We sincerely hope our modest donations can provide some joy at Christmas time."
Mr. Burchett and his colleague, Rennie Soobrattee, Consul (Immigration) took time out of their busy schedules to personally deliver the food they had collected from their colleagues. They came to our Service Centre because they sincerely wanted to meet some of the people we serve.
The generosity and kindness of the Canadian Embassy was enjoyed by many families who would not have been able to buy extra provisions over the festive season. Mr. Burchett told us: "We know that the work and dedication of Christian Action extends 365 days a year. We look forward to further supporting the work of this worthwhile organization."
Many generous donors support the work of Christian Action, so a heartfelt Thank You to each one of you on behalf of those who are unable to personally show their gratitude.
