The Door is Closing
"When I arrived in Hong Kong and had no food or shelter, Christian Action's kitchen door was the only door open to me." - Ali (a Somalian refugee)
When people walk through the kitchen door at Christian Action, they believe their hunger will be satisfied. And that has happened six days a week: three times a day on weekdays, and once every Saturday. Without your help, that door may be closing...
The people who come to eat have fled from war, torture and other unthinkable violations of their human rights. Meals are prepared by our full-time cook and a network of local partners, including churches, schools, Feeding Hong Kong and FoodLink. We provide close to 20,000 meals a year.
Our kitchen is more than just a place to eat - it is a home away from home where people are able to connect with one another and form a community in a safe and familiar place. Our Centre for Refugees is perhaps the only space of its kind in the city.
We are extremely grateful that for several years our food programme has been supported by one generous individual as well as several churches. However, our current levels of financial support are no longer sufficient to cover the costs. The recipients we serve do not hold HK ID cards, so this programme does not receive any government funding. It is not eligible for subsidies. We have always depended on the goodwill and generosity of the community.
We need $36,000 a month to keep the kitchen open to hungry people. We feed 2000 people every month, so for just HK$18.00 a hungry person receives a healthy, nutritious, balanced meal. $36,000 a month covers food, a kitchen and dining area, utilities, maintenance and staffing.
Refugees have formed themselves into a small community – one of the most vulnerable in the city. Losing the food programme places that community under threat. Your donation, (click here now!) no matter how small, could provide the last few dollars needed to keep the kitchen open for another month. We have until the end of May 2015 to receive commitments and pledges. Remember to add to your pledge by telling your friends and churches about this need, so that they too can make a contribution!
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:37-40)
