Fulfilling Our Potential
Each one of us has a gift - a talent - for doing something, and until we use our particular talent, life can be very frustrating. One of the services Christian Action offers which regularly discovers hidden talents is our Employees Retraining Board (ERB) Manpower Development Scheme. Betty is one of the women who has benefitted from this service.
Betty came to HK from mainland China in 2008 and although she was well educated, she struggled to find a job. She decided to enroll in an ERB Foundation Certificate course, and underwent training to become a hotel room attendant. She quickly secured a job, but four years later, overworked, exhausted and with terrible pain in her hands, Betty quit with the support of her husband.
He then encouraged her to take a Putonghua qualification test, and also studied with her. She soon found work as a part time tutor, but the pay was low, so she enrolled in a domestic helper training course which promised a higher salary.
During her enrolment interview, Christian Action’s placement officer realized that Betty was highly qualified, a good communicator, and good teacher. She encouraged Betty to undertake After School Care Tutor training instead.
Betty’s job satisfaction is now very high. In January 2015 she received the ERB Outstanding Awards for Trainees at the 7th ERB 'Manpower Development Scheme' Award Presentation ceremony cum 'ERB Expo 2015' Opening Ceremony. She is a role model for Hong Kong women, especially those from mainland China and the middle aged who encounter difficulties securing jobs. We are proud to support Betty and other women like her. She is dreaming of opening her own tutorial centre one day!
