Three Bags Full!

And four questions for you to ask yourself:

"Where does my trash go?"

"Do I care that Hong Kong's landfills are already or nearly full?"

"Can my trash become someone else's treasure?"

"Can my trash help to employ someone?"

With a bit of time and a little effort your trash can give you the pleasure of knowing that the toys and books and clothes which you thought were past their use-by date can delight a child without toys, a person who can't afford to buy clothes, and educate or simply delight a book-lover.

When you recycle through Christian Action, hundreds of people benefit! Our Green Collection program makes it easy to recycle. We ask that you simply bag your good quality household items such as clothing, toys, appliances and books, and then call us to arrange a collection date. The bags should be about 27x23x11 inches or 67x57x27cm. We will come to your home free of charge for a minimum of three bags, otherwise we charge HK$60 to cover costs. (We collect from manufacturers too! see "A fitting 50th Birthday Gift")

Once the donated bags get to Christian Action the fun with your cast-offs really starts! We employ previously unskilled, unemployed people to sort through the items under a strict quality control process.  These are people whom we have previously trained through our training programs. The goods are then placed in one of our three charity outlet stores and sold at prices way below high street values.

Because you have taken the time to bag your stuff, poor families are able to purchase good quality, previously loved items they could not otherwise afford. The proceeds of the sales are then ploughed into our humanitarian aid programs.  This includes children and adults through our refugee and asylum seeker program, as well as domestic helpers needing assistance in Hong Kong.

Recently we partnered with Tsung Tsin Mission Graceful Kindergarten, encouraging the children and their parents to empty their cupboards of things they no longer need. We taught the children the importance of sharing. Creating an awareness of the importance of recycling can’t start early enough! And no matter how old you are, recycling could still be your bag!
