World Refugee Day

I enjoyed the sharing of my experience of handling Vietnamese refugees much during the interview with Mr Chong from Cedar Fund

World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 every year as a tribute to the strength and courage of refugees across the globe. CA's concern for refugees was the firm foundation on which our work was based.

Our history of handling the influx of Vietnamese refugees during the 70s and 80s was an example of how to serve these suffering and homeless people.

Recently, I attended an interview conducted by the Cedar Fund regarding our services to Vietnamese refugees at that time. That took me back to 1986 when I first joined this organization. That was when the British Government declared Hong Kong as "the port of first asylum" for the refugees. The Colonial Administration set up temporary camps to accommodate the refugees who were unwillingly forced to live thousands of miles away from their home-land. The Administration also sought help from charitable organizations in the territory asking us to provide refugees with help.

As a part of God's plan, CA (then called Hong Kong Christian Aid to Refugees), was one of the major service providers for Vietnamese seeking asylum in Hong Kong.

To get a glimpse of how CA served and survived during those difficult days, and at the same time continuing to serve our own community, click here and read "Walking with the Refugees". It's the full story of my interview with the Cedar Fund. "We are continuing to serve as we did back then. Excellence then, was not an act, and it became a habit." How CA achieved excellence over the past few decades in providing social services to different communities in Hong Kong is revealed on that website.
