Composing a Bright Future

The words of a popular song by Whitney Houston are: ‘I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside …'

Here in Hong Kong many of our children experience difficulties, all of which make it hard for them to make their dreams come true. As a Christian NGO, we want to do what we can to help them. For that reason, we began the Child Development Fund (CDF). It was funded by the Labour and Welfare Bureau in 2008.

It has been a blessing to see many of our children now being given opportunities to achieve their dreams. One of them is Daphne, a 14-year-old who has been with us since 2018.

Daphne grew up in a single-parent family. She lived in a small flat with her mother and grandmother. Her Mum was the sole breadwinner, earning just enough for the family's needs because she only had a part-time job. Despite that, Daphne has clung onto a passion to pursue a career in music.

She had little skill in music, but with the encouragement of her mother, she applied to join a local orchestra. She went for an audition and was thrilled when she was selected to join the orchestra! She was finally able to learn to play various instruments and develop her passion. She has just passed the fifth grade exam in playing the cello and clarinet. She has even travelled with the orchestra to places like London and mainland China.

Daphne hopes to pursue further studies abroad and learn to play other instruments, such as the electronic keyboard and harp. She joined our CDF programme, and through targeted savings, it has helped her development plans. With the guidance of our passionate colleagues, she plans to fund her dream by setting up a small business for her handicrafts. She has also joined our guitar classes, and has become an active and inspiring member of our centre!

Please join us in praying for our CDF programme, so that more Hong Kong youth may realise their potential and see that their dreams become a reality.
