Nothing but Rice
A refugee mother recently came to our Centre for Refugees to collect her food package. After showing her appreciation with her customary bow, she told our staff “My kids and I have eaten only rice for several days because we had no other food.” Tears welled up in her eyes. Can you imagine meeting someone like that, and hearing what she said, “Nothing but rice.”? In the midst of the wealth in Hong Kong, that was a very sad thing for our staff to hear.
One refugee took his package and was so excited. He said, “Thank you so much – I can always count on Christian Action. You are here for us.” When I hear those statements, I thank God for donors like you, who enable us to give food vouchers to the poorest of the poor.
These are challenging days for everyone and it has placed a particularly heavy burden on the asylum seeker and refugee groups who have limited resources. COVID-19 has placed them at great risk. Many struggle with the increased cost of food and household items. The children are also affected because most refugee youngsters do not have computers and WiFi, yet everyone is supposed to go online for school work. The plight of Hong Kong's refugees was recently featured in a South China Morning Post article
I am so thankful to St Andrew’s Church, International Christian School, Feeding Hong Kong, Street Soccer HK, HK Jockey Club, Save the Children and the Henderson Development Anti-Epidemic Fund for their donations and for partnering with our Centre for Refugees' (CFR). On different days in April, our refugees and asylum seekers were invited to CFR at Chung King Mansions to receive supermarket food vouchers, masks, sanitizers, toiletries and food packages. We also handed out special items such as milk and diapers for 66 babies, and laptops for 40 students receiving education support.
Please donate and help CFR purchase needed resources. Let’s continue to join our hands and our hearts in prayer and action to continue fighting this pandemic together!
