The Power of Community

“When I was lost, she was always there for me. She listened intently and then helped me to see my challenges in a more positive light. She led me out of the woods and because of her, I am now a much stronger person.”

- Fong Fong, on the pivotal role our social worker Ada played in her life.

Shortly after immigrating to Hong Kong, Fong Fong was swindled out of nearly all her meagre savings. Then her husband passed away, leaving her and their young daughter practically penniless.

The only accommodation Fong Fong could afford was a tiny attic in a village house for HK$800 a month. She and her daughter had to use the village’s public toilet because they didn’t have one. The door to the attic was broken and they also lacked hot running water, so she had to boil water in order to bathe. She felt crushed and ashamed and avoided interacting with others.

With no relatives or friends in Hong Kong, Fong Fong applied to the Social Welfare Department for Comprehensive Social Security Assistance. Then, in 2015, she started attending our workshops and occupational training through our Employment Support Services. That was when her life really started turning around.

Today, Fong Fong is one of our most active volunteers! She frequently acts as emcee during our visits to elderly homes and she goes out of her way to lavish the elderly with love. She continues attending our workshops where she has not only gained skills, but also a support network of new friends. Fong Fong has an especially close relationship with our social worker Ada, who she credits with helping her rebuild her life.

God made all of us to exist in community. When the isolated and down-trodden are helped back into the community everybody wins!

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
