We Hardly Ever Get to Eat Mushrooms
Mrs. Szeto lives with her family of six in a subdivided flat in Sham Shui Po and receives food from our Service Centre. Her daughter Hiu Ching walks for 40 minutes to our Mongkok Service Centre for ‘After-school Child Care and Interest Classes’.
Because of the generosity of readers like you, and our corporate sponsors, we were able to give Mrs. Szeto’s family a special ‘Blessings Bag’ for Chinese New Year last year. Hiu Ching was so excited to see dried mushrooms in the bag we gave her family, an ingredient that her family’s budget seldom allowed, that she couldn’t stop thanking us, "Because we rarely get to eat mushrooms"! This year our Blessing Bag contains "Season of Love" handcrafted cookies, Chinese sausages, soup packs, noodles and dried mushrooms, all festive food items that carry special meaning to Chinese people at New Years.
Hiu Ching’s reaction to dried mushrooms underscores just how hard it is for Hong Kong’s low-income earners and their families. Because of your generosity, we distributed over 1,300 Blessings Bags. I would like to humbly ask your support for our 2023 program. We are looking to fill 1,500 bags this year and your donation would make a world of difference.
