Earthquake Hits China
A devastating, magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Northwestern China, near the mountainous Gansu - Qinghai border region at midnight on Monday December 18th. Roads and infrastructure worth millions of dollars were destroyed, together with over 100,000 rural mud-brick homes which collapsed; thousands of residents were injured and over 130 residents sadly lost their lives.
Christian Action has been serving residents of this area for over 25 years and our Qinghai Province - based staff rapidly sprang into action with earthquake relief. With the support of several donors and CA's pre-existing Emergency Fund, and in collaboration with the government of Haidong, our Qinghai team immediately procured, transported and distributed 2,000 padded jackets, 2,000 quilts, and 60 stoves, and other emergency supplies to the earthquake victims. These staff coordinated this over the festive season, acting out the true spirit of Christmas when we send warmth and love, this time to a freezing earthquake region where there is inadequate shelter & poor, or no heating facilities.
Christian Action’s work in this region extends far beyond emergency relief and recovery. One such project is the assistance for youths in Tongren City, Huangnan Prefecture, where we are constructing an After-School care facility for children, whose parents are unable to care for them during after-school hours because of work. The centre will also act as a public welfare services centre for the entire neighbourhood. This programme is in desperate need of your prayers and financial support. Please click here to give.
Lastly, as we wrap-up 2023, I would like to thank you for all the lives you have helped. Your support has provided food, shelter, health care, education, hope and more to men, women and children in Hong Kong and Qinghai. I look forward to doing more good work together, to honour Father God.
From my family to yours, wishing you all a Happy New Year. May God grant all your wishes in 2024! Siew Mei
