More Stunning News!

Three weeks ago I told you about 15 year-old Dou Ge who had been given four months to live by doctors in Qinghai. A week later I told you that a brain surgeon, Dr Wong, had read my blog, contacted his colleague, Dr Zhu in Hong Kong; they’d studied Dou Ge’s MRIs and believed that she could be saved.

Now here’s more stunning news... right now, as I send this to you, Dou Ge is undergoing life-saving surgery!

Accompanied by Caidan, a Tibetan staff member from our orphanage, she boarded an aircraft for the first time in her life and arrived at Shenzhen airport in South China on Dec 9 at 10:30pm. A car took her across the border to Hong Kong and she was in Ronald McDonald House by 1a.m., Dec 10. At 9am she was admitted to hospital.

We were very relieved about this because her condition had deteriorated. She was having a problem with the vision in her right eye, she couldn’t walk in a straight line or stand on one foot without holding on to something and she had been suffering from terrible headaches.

Dr Zhu assessed her condition and said her symptoms were consistent with pressure on the cerebellum by the tumor. His assessment was that the risks of surgery were below 10 per cent. He was confident that 100 per cent of the tumour could be removed. He believed that her cerebro-spinal fluid tunnel was blocked by the tumour, causing her headaches.

Surgery was due to begin today, Friday, December 11th at 8a.m and should be finished by 12 noon.

I visited Dou Ge and she was happy to see me. Caidan, our Tibetan staff member, said that Dou Ge didn’t like the food in hospital and cried, saying that she missed the food in our Children’s Home. When she looked at pictures of the children at our Home on a laptop, Dou Ge knew all their names. I was surprised to hear this because there are about 300 children in the Home! She also said she missed them. I thought this particularly poignant. A sick child with parents would miss their Mommy or Daddy, but Dou Ge misses the children she knows and loves in the only home where she herself receives love and care.

Please pray for Dou Ge’s complete recovery.

We don’t know yet if the tumour is benign; whether she will need chemotherapy or radiotherapy; whether the hydrocephulus will subside, or whether more surgery will be needed to insert a shunt.

Because she will need medical care in HK for almost a month, the campaign to save Dou Ge continues.
May I encourage you to fwd this post to all your friends, to pray, and to donate.

THANK YOU!

Glory be to God on high, we praise thee we bless thee, we give thanks to thee for all thy mercy and loving kindness. We give thanks for all the loving skill and kindness of the doctors and surgeons, and for all the care and attention paid by the staff and members of Christian Action without whom none of this wonderful chain of events would not have been started in the first place. God bless Dou Ge and all her brothers and sisters in her home. I hope we can give her a Happy Christmas here in Hong Kong, so far from her home! Very much love to all from Bernard.
