Partnering to help refugees smile

Last week I told you about the plight of refugees who make it to Hong Kong and the World Refugee Day Fundraising campaign Christian Action is doing to help them.  Since writing to you I had the opportunity to join a group of volunteers last weekend and I found it so inspiring that I wanted to share with you.

The event I attended was a free dental clinic in Shek Kip Mei for 30 asylum-seekers and refugees who would ordinarily have been unable to afford dental help.  They received dental hygiene classes, fillings, scaling and in some cases tooth extractions and it was all provided for free.  To make all this possible, Christian Action partnered with two fabulous organizations: Hong Kong Christian Dental Fellowship and Project Concern Hong Kong.

What struck me on that Saturday was the magnitude of what can be accomplished when we all work together.  ‘Professional Ministries’ like Christian Action are powerless to help refugees on our own.  This has always been the case and always will be. But when we all pitch in there is a synergy and momentum that brings about enormous change.

This month Christian Action is holding a World Refugee Day Campaign.  If you are able please consider holding a fundraising or volunteering event of your own design.  It may be as close to home as a bake sale, or as ambitious as an ultra marathon, as Bonita Choi did last year.  For help getting started you can email or phone 852 2723 6626 and Julia at CA’s Refugee Program will help with all you need!

Lastly, thank you again for your support and prayers for all Christian Action is doing!

God bless,

Siew Mei
