Try, Try Again!
A couple of weeks ago I told you about Mona Lau, who is on staff at our Xining Children's Home in Qinghai. Mona is providing expert and up-to-date training for the locally employed staff team.
When one of my Hong Kong staff members asked Mona about the impact of Christian Action's work on the children in Qinghai, and the difficulties in that remote province, she replied with the following story.
Mona said; We have a five month old boy, called Zheng Si Lin, who was born with cataracts on both eyes. Recently Christian Action invited a team of doctors to Qinghai, and among them was Dr. Sit, from Hong Kong. After examining Si Lin, Dr. Sit recommended that the cataracts be removed before he reached the age of six months.
We immediately made enquiries at Qinghai Charity Hospital to find out whether this simple procedure could be carried out locally. We discovered that there is no specialist in residence locally, but then we were excited to find that a Christian Action contact from Australia, Dr. Loon, would be visiting and he would be the perfect surgeon to perform the operation!
Our excitement didn’t last long. Unfortunately the local anaesthetist lacked experience with paediatric cases. So the opportunity was lost for Dr Loon to perform the surgery on Si Lin and a valuable training opportunity for local surgeons was also lost. We finally had to look beyond Qinghai for help for Si Lin. This very much highlights the need for further capacity building in Qinghai.
Si Lin is now in Beijing and surgery is imminent, so please pray for his healing and also for our staff, like Mona, who serve faithfully, always trying to find solutions that will improve the lives of children in our care.
