Harmony in Diversity

Hong Kong is often labeled a 'world class city', yet people of ethnic minorities, who are a part of our world, still find it difficult to integrate with the Hong Kong community.

At our Celebrate Colours Carnival on November 5th people from these ethnic minorities had the opportunity to showcase talents worthy of a world class city. Gill Mohinderpual Singh is Christian Action’s official Ambassador, and we are proud to have his support for our programmes which assist with the integration of ethnic minorities. He is known in Hong Kong as Q-BoBo, and is a much loved entertainer and artist as well as being a wonderful example of the positive contribution made by ethnic minorities to our internationally renowned city. He started his career as an officer in the correctional services department, before moving on to become the well known personality he is today. He shared the key to his success.

One of our many aims is to promote integration between the Chinese population and people of ethnic minorities in HK. Q-BoBo captivated the audience with his charm and talent, and then he gave the audience the key to his success. He said, "Learning to speak the local language gained me a lot of acceptance, not only with the integration process, but also in my career as an entertainer! My Cantonese improved so much that people were unable to tell that I was actually a foreigner when speaking to me on the phone." After sharing these wise words, Q-BoBo sang a song in Cantonese and English, and invited the audience to sing the chorus with him.

Harmony became evident when talented artists representing several nations entertained the audience with music, dance, and drama.  The lines of separation between performers and audience blurred more than once as people were drawn onto the stage to dance, sing and clap their hands to the unfamiliar, yet irresistible music – everyone found themselves united by the steady rhythms of the artists.

At our drop in service centres in Jordan and Tuen Mun we have helped over 400  people on the road to achieving their own success by offering regular language courses in 2011. I hope that one day soon our world class city will also be famous because it has no lines of separation between the people of HK and the people from many nations who have come here looking for peace.  Like different musical instruments that together provide beautiful music, we as individual nations can also live together in peace.
