From Sadness to Smiles
On February 2, 2010 I wrote this to you about a heroic mother and her child: "Jun Jun, who has cerebral palsy, is now having seizures incessantly and has lost all her appetite. She is on maximum medication and therapists can't work on her because she screams in pain when her limbs are moved. Her mother is distraught at the thought of losing the only person she loves. Her service to her child has been truly Christlike. I promised to get a second opinion on what can be done for her. She will be seeing a Swiss doctor in Xining this week."
I also wrote: "She is in hospital but even that presents challenges - how does a single mother who earns 800 RMB per month pay a 300RMB per day hospital bill?"
A Christian Action sponsor subsidised Jun Jun's care and she stayed in our Xining Children's Home when she came out of hospital. In June last year Mrs Wang, like any mother, wanted her daughter to come home but she needed someone to take care of Jun Jun while she went to work. A CA sponsor agreed to pay the care giver 1,000 RMB (US$152) per month for the first six months and 800 RMB per month for the following six months, up to May, 2011. The change in Jun Jun these days is remarkable.
Elfy, our staff member visits her regularly as part of our care and says, "Jun Jun looks good and she can't talk but she smiles at me when I talk to her. Her mother says that Jun Jun's seizures are less frequent. She likes to watch TV and listen to music. Because Jun Jun is in bed for long periods, her digestive system suffers, but she loves fruit, so that helps.
"Her caregiver visits every day from 8am to 6pm. She takes Jun Jun outside when the weather is good, and each day she massages Jun Jun's muscles and then encourages Jun Jun to match colour cards."
Sponsoring children like Jun Jun is helping to prevent child abandonment in this very poor province of China. Will you decide today to sponsor a child who desperately needs some tender loving care?
