Shanna goes to school!

Remember Shanna? You generously helped us to pay for two lots of surgery and two hearing implants for this beautiful orphaned child about two years ago. Shanna was then adopted by loving parents in the U.S who have kept us up to date with her progress.  The latest news is particularly good.

It's good news because when Shanna began her life with the Hussey family, all of whom use Sign Language, Shanna didn't want to have anything to do with her implants, preferring to use Sign Language instead.  But her Mom, Leslie writes:

"Shanna has begun school and she loves her teacher, Lia. One morning, Shanna told Lia, 'I want my pink implants on!' Since then she has been wearing her implants every day, and Lia says that Shanna begins to voice as soon as she has them on. It has been quite a transformation! We are glad that Shanna feels comfortable with her implants now, and we are excited to see what will happen next."

Shanna recently had her second mapping appointment. In brief, 'mapping' means organising sets of words and teaching students the relationship between the words because deaf students acquire language in much the same way that hearing children do.

Leslie says, "Shanna has also learned a lot of Sign Language, and she is quite talkative!  Whenever we watch movies together, Shanna's little hand taps my shoulder every few minutes and she makes comments and asks questions. It’s exciting to see her personality and thoughts come forward."

The Christian Action staff aim to give all the children in our Homes happy memories, so it's good to hear that Shanna is also talking about her life in China!

Don't forget we need your support in order to care for our children!
