Santa's Surprise
Children from families that have migrated to Hong Kong from mainland China frequently find themselves at a disadvantage in our community. Their mothers are either low-income earners or unable to work, so they are dependent on welfare. Fathers may be deceased, or they simply disappear because they're too stressed by the burden of providing for the family.
Children from such families never dream of meeting anyone famous, but Christmas is a time of surprises!
This year Santa came early to our Mong Kok Service Centre for New Arrivals, bringing cookies for all the children. But the children didn’t expect one of his helpers to be Hong Kong’s famous illustrator, Carrie Chau!
Christian Action decided to add to the Christmas cheer in Hong Kong by producing a tin of cookies, but we really wanted something special, not just any old tin. Carrie generously allowed Christian Action to use her illustration depicting a little girl holding four of her dolls. "It's a portrayal of my childhood!" she told me, "I want all children to have a happy childhood." That was the clincher for me, because I too want all children to have a happy childhood. Carrie and I have a lot in common.
She knows that Christian Action is able to bring a little happiness to hundreds of children as we create a safe haven for them at our Mong Kok Centre, providing them with after school care, extra tutorials and the homework support they need.
Carrie came to meet these children and to encourage them in their artistic endeavors. She helped each child design their own Christmas card, so they could thank everyone who supported this campaign by purchasing cookies. One of those cards will be Christian Action’s official Christmas card this year, so keep an eye out for it!
Just before Christmas, each child will receive a tin of cookies to take home, thanks to our very own 'Santa' (who wishes to remain anonymous).
You too can bless your family and friends with this gorgeous tin of cookies. When you place your order, remember that you are supporting disadvantaged children like those at our Mong Kok Centre. And receiving Carrie’s illustration on the tin as well!
