Tomorrow's Promising Leaders

High School graduates from Zeku county have little or no chance of going to university. I wrote about Peng Mao last week, and now I want to tell you about Duo Jie and Cai Rang.  These are all students who are now keen to 'give back' out of gratitude for what they have received.

Duo Jie’s unemployed father cares for his invalid mother, and his younger sister occasionally finds work to support the family. At high school Duo Jie was always pipped to the post by other students fiercely competing for a precious few scholarships.  His future looked bleak until Christian Action came along and turned on the light at the end of his tunnel.  Duo Jie is now a computer science student at Gansu Ethnic Normal University. Without our help he would have quit school to support his family. Duo Jie’s appreciation was shown when he spent a huge chunk of his living allowance on a six hour bus ride in sub zero temperatures to attend our holiday activities, show his gratitude, and not let his social workers down.

Duo Jie with his sleeves rolled up during his community service, giving back!

Cai Rang, also from a poverty-stricken family, was another one who defied the elements and rode his motorbike over hazardous mountain passes through heavy snow to participate. He resembled a snow covered Yeti when he arrived, chilled to the bone. No-one thought about taking a picture of the ‘legendary creature’ in their midst because everyone was anxious to warm him up!

Duo Jie and Cai Rang are just two of hundreds of students in our scholarship programme with similar stories. They are grabbing the opportunity offered to them with dogged determination and with gratitude.

Giving the gift of a full scholarship will set you back only RMB 2,250 (~US$300) for three years of high school.  A University scholarship costs just RMB 19,500 (~US$ 2,500).

You could write to me via the comments box below with questions or to let us know you too want to help build one of China’s future leaders!
