With a little help...

Burning the midnight oil is not an expression you'd normally associate with a young child. Yet that's what nine-year-old Pui, a primary school student, did each night as she struggled with her homework. She fell asleep during school hours, and struggled to perform academically. This little girl was desperately in need of a helping hand, but she was too shy to ask for assistance.

Pui's mother had been unable to help Pui with her home-work, so their relationship had become strained. Then Pui’s mother found Christian Action’s service centre for new arrival families.

Now Pui regularly attends our after school child care service, where she is able to complete her homework and go home to get the sleep she needs at night. She is also able to concentrate at school, and her grades have improved.  So has her relationship with her mother.

Partnering with the Rotary Club Bayview Sunshine, and One IVE design (who supplied the art teacher), Christian Action recently organized an Art Jam for our children. They learnt various drawing techniques, including how to make 3D cards using chopsticks. The volunteers from Rotary Club helped the children turn their one dimensional designs into beautiful 3D creations.  It was beautiful to witness the children’s sense of accomplishment and wonder at what fine art they were capable of producing!

Pui's love for art began to emerge. She became bolder and started actively participating in group activities, readily asking for help if she hit an obstacle.

With a little help from her Christian Action friends, Pui is now a changed child!

Jesus said: "You are my friends if you do what I command." (John 15:14)
