Impacting Young People

Every time I look at students around me, I see unlimited opportunities for them. In April, I was invited for an interview with a number of seventh-grade students from International Christian School (ICS), to share with them my career vision and the work of Christian Action for orphans in China and the underprivileged in Hong Kong. The interview was lined up by ICS teacher, Shannon who was also the adoptive father of Qun, a former child of our Children's Home in Qinghai.
The students were completing a humanities school project called "Ask an Expert" and their topic was about orphan care. I had the honour to be the humanities expert for this particular group of students, and was excited to share my past experience in providing orphan care to the homeless children in Qinghai, in hopes that they would have a better understanding on the care for abandoned youth in our country.
After sharing my story about how I felt God's calling to serve the underprivileged, the students were instantly fascinated and they asked how they could help. I was so touched by their compassion and willingness to help others in need! The ICS students made the following statement on how moved they were after the interview:
"Before the academic fair, we didn't really care that much about orphans. We just felt sorry for them but didn't really take any actions. After the interview with Siew Mei, we started to have more empathy for the orphans."
Even Shannon commented after the interview - "Thank you so much! I think you had a much bigger impact on them than all the research they have been doing." Well, I am glad to know that I am a competent expert in the subject!
