Loving the Elderly

We will all be elderly one day! As a society, Hong Kong is aging rapidly, and with this reality come many challenges. Many of our elderly residents are lonely - and that's where we can step in and serve them.

Many elderly folk don't have the support systems they need in order to live happy lives. Last month, some of our service users volunteered to share love and friendship with a local home for the elderly.

Volunteers from low-income communities, children and adults, gathered with staff from our Sau Mau Ping Centre who had planned a day packed with fun.

They played a game of "Happy Cards" - the person who guessed the right card won a prize. There was also the familiar activity of Bingo. All the elderly folks seemed to enjoy the interaction and energy that filled the room.

To each elderly person, every moment spent together was a treasured gift of time. Volunteers sat with a resident and chatted with them. This was by far the most special moment of the day, because some residents rarely see family members who can spend quality time with them.

The response from many of our volunteers was also special. They deeply enjoyed the opportunity to gain volunteer experience. To know that our own service users are discovering the joy of serving others reminded me why we do what we do at Christian Action. Nothing could be better than seeing love being shared by young and old volunteers.

I pray that all the volunteers will know the power of God's love, and the privilege of being His hands and feet to those in need.
