Empowering Women and Saving Lives
Did you know that one of the leading causes of cancer deaths for women in Hong Kong is cervical cancer, yet it is highly preventable. Recently, Christian Action collaborated with Project Teal, a pilot programme whose mission is to lower the incidence of cervical cancer by raising awareness of screening and providing co-testing in under-served communities.
Many women work hard and also care for their families. Often, their own health is secondary to that of their loved ones. One challenge faced by these women is the lack of access to vital healthcare information. Thanks to Project Teal, we were able to provide cervical cancer co-testing (HPV screening + pap test) to 150 women from our service centres.
Out of the 150 participants, 138 had double-negative results, meaning they will receive their next screening in five years. They now have peace of mind after being informed and empowered in the journey of caring for their own health. The remaining women had results that require follow-up. This shows the importance of Project Teal. Without co-testing, these women would not be receiving early treatment and possible prevention. Praise God that they will now receive this care!
I believe that underprivileged women deserve equal access to opportunities for cancer screening and prevention. On 9 May, at a Press Conference for Project Teal, I had the opportunity to share my convictions with the hope that it will inspire positive change and greater equality.
What an honour it is to serve the under-privileged women of Hong Kong! I am so thankful for the success of Project Teal and pray that this press conference would bring greater equality to women in the future!
