Transforming Vision
I always cherish the opportunities to spend time among young people, so a recent opportunity to speak to some of the best and brightest youth was wonderful. Many of these young people were from countries represented in China's newest Belt and Road Initiative at The Global Youth Leaders Summit 2018 hosted at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
The morning session featured three keynote speakers, including a friend of mine, Dr Angelina Yuen who is the Senior Advisor to the President of PolyU. Her message was especially inspiring, because she spoke about the university's movement towards service learning initiatives and the impact it has had on their student body. Also present was Stella Lau, the Headmistress of Diocesan Girls' School and former Chairperson of the Women's Commission. It was an honour to be with her, as she has faithfully supported our Qinghai children with donations for years.
Throughout the speeches, I could tell that the students were attentive, and ready to engage with some of society's most pressing issues. I couldn't wait to share Christian Action's story with them!
I shared news of our work in Qinghai – the very province which is now front and centre in China's 'Belt and Road' initiative? I showed the students a video which revealed CA's journey over the years, beginning with my dream about the baby girl, Wen Wen, to the present. We have served over 1,400 abandoned and disabled children. 200 of them have been adopted and are now in their forever homes.
After the video, I told them about my journey from a young girl with a pipe dream to become a singer to where I am today, a woman with a mission from God to make the world a better place.
The highlight of the event was the Q&A. It was a privilege to hear from these brilliant young minds. One young woman was just starting her work with an NGO serving disabled children in India. I was able to give her some advice on how to build support and get funding to do this life changing work. The panellists and I also shared our experiences of persevering through failure, and the importance of never giving up.
It was such an honour and privilege to be among these future leaders of our society and with other influencers in our city. I pray that our message has left an imprint on each of the young hearts, so that we will see more people with big hearts, ready to do God's work obediently and lovingly.
