Changing Poverty
The Labour and Welfare Bureau first asked Christian Action to run the Child Development Fund (CDF) Projects in 2008. CA has once again been asked to continue our mentorship programme to support 345 new participants in this project.
Our mentors show our students how to set goals for their personal development. The mentors continue to monitor the progress of our students. Despite the pandemic, Zoom helps us maintain our services and the core activities in small groups.
From 2015 to 2017, Sheung Kwan (SK) participated in our CDF project, and has been coming to CA regularly to do charity work. Recently, he began volunteering in our CDF workshops. He said about that experience, “I initially learned about the scheme in school. From different training and personal development workshops, I understood more about myself, the scheme, and life.” SK attended various workshops, charity events and trips with Outward Bound and Adventure Ship. “I joined most activities as a team-player, then a camp leader. I discovered my interests, learned empathy, teamwork, leadership, planning and communication skills, and gained confidence.”
In 2016, SK’s mother had cancer. SK was still in middle school, and felt depressed and financially stressed. He said, “I ate white bread for all three meals so that I could save the money for my mother’s medical expenses. When I lost her, I contemplated suicide. Thanks to the social workers at CA, I slowly came out of my grief.”
After three years, SK had saved enough to buy a guitar, a laptop, and have private English lessons. He wanted to continue studying and pursuing his musical interests. With the help of CA, SK also found solace in Christ. He is studying to become a social worker so that one day he can help others. He said, “I’m grateful for the soft, folded hands that have prayed for me. I have now found a purpose in life and want to take the Path of Faith through my future work.”
I am truly honoured and touched to witness SK’s growth from a schoolboy who endured unimaginable hardship to a young man with confidence and ambition. God works miraculously in finding ways to save our underprivileged youth and children. Please join us in continuing to love and support our next generation. Your donation to our Friends of CA campaign can change a child’s life for the better.
