Locating pain online!

Every summer, the team from Hong Kong Baptist University Chinese Medicine (HKBUCM) visits the staff and the teens at our Qinghai Bridge Programme.  They are there to give the staff medical assessments and special-care training. Due to the pandemic, that was not possible this year, so the HKBUCM team hosted an online programme.

The team usually performed physical evaluations in order to demonstrate those skills to the staff of our Qinghai Bridge Programme, but that  was not possible online.  Instead, the HKBU team explained each procedure in great detail. Our Qinghai staff had to learn and then directly perform the new techniques on the teens in our Bridge programme. There were some limitations in learning this way, but I am happy to tell you that this has greatly improved communications between HKBUCM and our Bridge Programme team.  It has now become more proactive and collaborative in the learning process!

Here’s what some of our Qinghai Bridge teens and staff have said:

"Eric has struggled with immobility for years. But through the online sessions, he has found new ways to alleviate his pain.  He said, “I learned to locate the energy points that would trigger discomfort, so now I can give myself simple massages or finger acupuncture for quick pain relief. I can also easily tell others the location of specific spots on which to tackle my pain! Thank you so much to the teachers and students at HKBU!”

Instructor Hai, our Qinghai staff, expressed his team’s overall satisfaction with the online programme. He said, “The programme has changed the dynamics from being teacher-led to student-led. It has laid a new foundation for online consultations and training.  We will consider adding them to our future  long-term practices!  Despite the success of the online workshops, our Qinghai members and I cannot wait to reunite with the HKBUCM team in person next summer."

While 2020 has been a tough year, nothing can stop us from continuing to serve those who are living with disabilities. Donate now and join us in helping them live a better life!
