Teaching that Touches Lives

Life in Hong Kong is stressful for families. Many parents have told me of their difficulties in caring for their children. That is why, for over three years, we have offered after-school care to families in our area. Forty percent of those who use our services are children who need special education. Our programmes have impacted the children in various ways.

For example, Man Tsai is an adorable boy. He makes us smile when he comes to us after school. He is a Primary 6 student with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Man Tsai struggled to get good grades. Additionally, his parents couldn't be with him after school because they both worked because they were already carrying a heavy financial burden. When Main Tsai's parents found out about our after-school child care programme, it was a great relief. Under the guidance of our passionate social workers, Man Tsai eventually improved his learning attitude and his grades. He has also made many new friends. He said:

"I am happy to be here. Apart from helping me with my homework, there are many activities I can take part in. The social workers take really good care of me. Whenever I am not doing well in school, they comfort and encourage me and make me feel good."

Our social worker, Nicole, who tutors Man Tsai, says that Man Tsai was the student who touched her heart the most.

"He used to have mediocre academic grades. I had to force him to study and helped with his homework, because he couldn't sit still in the classroom. But when he was in the fifth grade, he won a prize for making the best progress in academic achievement. He even asked his family to take a photo to show me! Now he is able to finish his homework on his own! "

I am deeply encouraged by Man Tsai's growth and improvement because we have given him opportunities that he would not have had. I hope that many more children will develop under our care. I pray for children to excel in their academic pursuits as Man Tsai has done, so that they may achieve their dreams!
