Walking the Extra Mile
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40
The Coronavirus outbreak has affected everyone’s lives in Hong Kong, but no group is more vulnerable than Hong Kong’s elderly. This is especially the case for our elderly poor, many of whom live in overcrowded apartment buildings and don’t even have funds for basic protections such as masks. This week I want to share with you a small miracle that occurred during my family’s stay back home in Malaysia which allowed us to serve Hong Kong’s elderly poor.
Like every year, my family and I celebrated the Chinese New Year holiday in Malaysia. While there we began receiving reports that the situation in Hong Kong had worsened and so my son, husband and I immediately began exploring ways that we might be able to serve from where we were. God led us to a neighbor who happened to be a supplier of surgical masks!
The events that followed were a rollercoaster of emotions. We were elated to learn that the supplier had over 50,000 masks in stock, but his asking price was excessive. After hours of haggling, he finally agreed to sell at a discount - but then we ran into problems with the cargo company. After much prayer we located a fantastic freight company and agent – what an experience!
Next week I want to share with you the amazing story of how Christian Action staff, local churches, NGOs and community partners all came together with the elderly poor in our service area to distribute the masks - and so much more.
Thank-you for continuing to pray and give during this challenging period. Let us ask God for protection, peace, and courage that we will be able to bear through this pandemic. We pray that fear will not prevail and for hope to fill us all!
