Fighting COVID-19 and Ethnic Disadvantages
Unlike many local Chinese, some of our ethnic minority friends did not go through the SARS epidemic in 2003, so they were completely unprepared for COVID-19. Even at locally organised COVID relief events, many couldn’t understand Cantonese, so they missed key information on how to obtain face masks, sanitisers and disinfectants. It saddens me deeply to see the inequality they are faced with in their daily lives.
To support them during this pandemic, I am happy to announce our partnership with NWS Holdings Limited. We will work with them to hand out relief packages of cleaners, sanitisers and disinfectants to 200 ethnic minority families at our SHINE Centre in Jordan. We’ll also distribute information in Nepalese on how to prevent COVID-19 infections and to dispel folk remedies such as the consumption of ginger, turmeric and garlic to prevent the virus. Thank you NWS Holdings, and other local corporations, for helping to bring love and harmony to the vulnerable and our community.
To keep Hong Kong’s ethnic minority population up-to-date on the government’s COVID-related subsidies we’ve been publishing information in Bahasa, Hindi, Tagalog and Thai on our Facebook page. We have also uploaded tutorials on cooking, light exercise and DIY hand sanitisers to help them combat boredom and depression. Our SHINE Centre in Jordan has resumed some of it’s services such as cricket and badminton training on weekends, and the enrolment of adult Cantonese lessons and after-school tutorial classes for schoolchildren. I can’t wait to see their beautiful smiles and continue to empower our lovely EM friends!
I’m so thankful for the partnerships that enable us to help ethnic minority families. Please partner with us to serve needy children by donating all or part of your HK$10,000 government handout. Thank you!
