We don’t have 5 Loaves and 2 Fish…

Crippled by a third wave of coronavirus infections, Hong Kong has seen a slump in economic growth. Many families are facing job losses and salary cuts. Government data shows that unemployment, underemployment, and poverty rates are at record highs of 6.1%, 3.5%, and 14.9% respectively.

In the last census survey, some 91,800 households and 209,700 persons were estimated to be living in sub-divided units, of which 18.1% were children under 15. There has been a sharp rise in the demand for emergency food aid, particularly in Yau Tsim Mong (YTM) district. That is the location of our Mongkok Service Centre. Keeping our food aid services in a clean setting has been a major challenge.

To meet the escalating needs while observing social distancing rules, we have expanded our service scope in YTM and now have a Food Station near our existing service centre. With your help, we will provide food support to 1,000 people 20 days in a month for two years. This will include the distribution of grocery care packages of rice, fruits and vegetables, milk and cooking oil. In addition, we will make use of a brand new vending machine to provide 300 free, nutritious meal boxes a day, seven days a week by rotation for low-income families, the unemployed, and others who are in need. We are collaborating with our long-term partners – Food Angel, Feeding Hong Kong, as well as other corporations, church organisations and individuals.

In the New Testament, we read that Jesus fed 5,000 people (John 6:1-14) It was a miracle, and it filled the stomachs of the hungry. It also encouraged them to believe in God’s love and power. As sons and daughters of God, we invite you to join us in our “Emergency Food!” Campaign. If our fundraising campaign exceeds two years of reserves for 1,000 people, we will be following the example of Jesus who willingly fed the hungry.
