Touching Lives
Jal and Pervin Shroff, have been involved with Christian Action for over 10 years. As Parsees, the Shroffs come from refugee families that had fled Persia. Jal’s parents settled down in Shanghai for a few years but fled to Hong Kong during cultural revolution; eventually they settled in Hong Kong.
Jal watched his parents abandon all they had and adjust to their new life as they rebuilt their business in Hong Kong. Jal has inherited their entrepreneurial spirit, and has became a successful businessman. Because of his family’s experience, he is saddened to see refugees today denied the opportunities he once enjoyed. He says, “Because they are not given the right to work in Hong Kong, many have no alternative but to beg for their survival. Every cent matters to the displaced who are now stranded in Hong Kong.”
Jal and Pervin are always eager to help refugees, so when Pervin heard about CA’s Centre for Refugees (CFR) from a friend who is in her counselling network, she became a volunteer, saying, “It was because I saw the marvellous work Christian Action does to help alleviate the suffering of one of the most vulnerable groups in Hong Kong.” For about four years, Pervin was a volunteer, and offered counselling services at our CFR. She said, “When my husband came to Hong Kong, he had his family. But refugees in Hong Kong today have had to leave their families behind. I try to offer comfort and hope. Some of their suffering is so awful that even the touch of another person’s hand can bring comfort, and eventual change.”
The Shroffs aim to help clear the false perceptions about migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. They want to raise awareness about the lives of refugees. “We hope to see them become valued and respected members of our society.”
Over the last decade, I have been truly thankful for the Shroff’s selfless devotion to our refugee friends. Our work would not be possible without the support of people like you and the Shroffs.
