Food for the Soul
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)
Christian Action recently arranged a big home visit event with 70 families who live below the poverty line. During the event I met Ah Wah, who we’ve been serving at our Mong Kok Service Centre. We presented her with a goodie bag of necessities and a brand-new rice cooker purchased by IN166 of Invision Charity Foundation.
Ah Wah, her husband and two young sons live in a cramped, subdivided unit. They share a tiny common kitchen and bathroom with the residents of two neighboring flats.
Under the Emergency Food Programme, Ah Wah receives a monthly complimentary meal box comprising staples like rice (5kg), 30 eggs, cooking oil, milk and other donation-dependent necessities like biscuits and hand sanitisers.
Christian Action’s Emergency Food Programme was started last September in order to help low-income families who are too poor to buy the bare essentials for nutritious daily meals. Up to late-February, it has fed more than 1,000 people thanks to generous donations from friends of Christian Action. It is my prayer that we can increase the number of individuals helped to 1,500 by this April.
Sarah, a volunteer from class IN166, said that though rent almost consumes all their government subsidies, these low-income families still live in subpar homes. “They barely have any money left to support their children and daily living, so it’s wonderful that they can count on Christian Action for basic nutritional needs.”
“The help and support I’ve received at Christian Action has opened my eyes to the kindness in this world,” said Ah Wah. “We are grateful they’ve come up to see us, and their gifts are very useful. Our old rice-cooker is barely working, and we now have a new one for making soup!”
While we hope Ah Wah and other low-income families flourish under God’s light, we’d also like to remind everyone to lend a helping hand whenever possible to the underprivileged, especially during this pandemic. Everyone is suffering under COVID-19, and every little bit counts.
