God’s Helper
I would like to invite you to send your thanks and appreciation to Ms. Cymie Ng, one of our star volunteers at Xining Children’s Home.
Cymie graduated from The University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor degree in Speech & Hearing Sciences and a Master degree in Medical Sciences. She is also obtaining a PhD degree in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She thrives on helping others. In 2007, she was invited to our Children’s Home in Xining to share her skills and expertise in speech therapy and training.
During her first year at the Home, she noticed that there was a regular turnover of local staff, despite the impressive infrastructure and hardware. She reckoned that the lack of know-how in speech therapy was one of the reasons for the turnover.
In the second year, Cymie took on the role of instructor for speech therapy. She is a firm believer in the idiom “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Cymie wanted to extend the services beyond the children, to the teachers. She wanted her therapy techniques to be localised so she set out to foster a train-the-trainer programme that would sustain after her departure. The staff and the children benefited from Cymie's teaching philosophy.
Since 2007, Cymie has visited Xining Children’s Home six times, offering one-on-one guidance to the instructors for the challenges they face. To further offer her knowledge and skills, Cymie arranged her students of the Master degree in Speech Therapy from Hong Kong to Xining. They provided hands-on training to the teachers at the Home and other organisations, as well as to the children and the parents within the Xining community.
Cymie has certainly served God in amazing ways. Our thanks go to Cymie for her wonderful service!
