To Serve and not Wait to be Served
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28)
Christians usually don't wait to be served - they want to serve. It is wonderful to be able to spread Christian love and to gather with others who share the same vision. Serving the community is something most of us love to do - and we don't expect any reward in return for our service. Mandy is no exception.
Under our newly launched House Captain Programme, Mandy is one of our House Captains at the On Tai Estate Service Centre. After she was trained, she had the communication skills and the techniques of organising activities for children. That includes the workflow of different kinds of programmes. She is actively involved in our volunteer programmes.
Mandy said, “I feel so happy when I am helping others.” She said this several times when we talked to her. I truly understand her happiness because I feel the same when I see lives changed, and when I see the smiles of our service users. Their joy and satisfaction is really good to see.
Mandy said, “I was so touched when I visited an elderly person and heard the words of real appreciation: Thank you. On another occasion, after I looked after a child whose mother was attending a parent’s talk in the centre, the child came to hug me, told me what she had made in the craft class, and invited me to play with her. These are the little moments of encouragement that a child will remember for a long time."
