Chinese Medicine Seminar for Underprivileged Women
Ah Mui is an underemployed single mother with three children in primary and secondary school. She suffers from stress-induced insomnia. Every penny she receives from government welfare goes towards feeding, clothing and educating her children. There's no money left for her to take care of herself. Ah Mui’s insomnia resulted in bad moods and constantly yelling at her kids. Any of us who had insomnia and Ah Mui's circumstances, would also yell at our kids.
We always try to find solutions, or offer help, to ease the struggles of our service users. At our Mongkok Service Centre our partnership with Hong Kong Baptist University’s School of Chinese Medicine (HKBUCM) offers seminars titled Sleeping Well in Menopause: Chinese Medicine for Menopause.
We encouraged Ah Mui to join the seminars, and she soon learned what kinds of food to eat, self-massage techniques, and exercises to help her with insomnia. Importantly, she also learned the importance of loving herself and taking time to take care of her body and mind. In that way, she could take good care of her family.
I am happy to report that she is feeling less stressed and sleeping better these days! I thank God for our long-lasting partnership with HKBUCM because we have helped heal countless people over the years. Before this seminar, HKBUCM supported our China Programme through Chinese Medicine training for our staff in Qinghai. This year, HKBUCM suggested this topic because they know that insomnia is a common symptom of menopause, and underprivileged women do not have the means to see Chinese Medicine doctors.
188 women attended the seminar via Zoom from our Women’s Groups in Mongkok and Sheung Shui Service Centres as well as Choi Wan headquarters. We were able to gather 40 women at our Mongkok Service Centre because we arranged food collection for the same day. It was a successful event and the women are already asking for more seminars similar to that one. Praise God for providing such engaging content, and for faithful HKBUCM teachers!
