We Are One Body

When we planned to set up a prosthetic and orthotic service in Xining Children’s Home in 2006, we stumbled over many hurdles because we lacked professional expertise and healthcare infrastructure. Dr. Alex Au Yang arrived in 2008 and has filled in all the parts that had been missing since we began this service. He has spent the past 13 years voluntarily serving children in Qinghai Province and is one of our long-standing patrons.

Dr. Au Yang is one of the leading authorities on prosthetic and orthotic treatment at Prince of Wales Hospital. He helped us set up the whole Prosthetic and Orthotic Department at Xining Children’s Home, including building installations and the procurement of supplies.

In addition, Dr. Au Yang provided clinical services, professional staff training, educational talks for special education teachers and therapists, consultation and case studies, and prosthetic production and repair. He is the founder of the department and laid the cornerstone for prosthetic and orthotic services of Xining Children’s Home.

Dr. Au Yang did not have a team, but had to extend himself to accomplish everything. He learned to overcome every challenge.

He now says that the experience was rewarding. He said, “I feel that getting in touch with children and staff, through serving and training, is very meaningful, for I know I’m changing lives with love and care. Medical service isn’t all about treatment. It’s also about life. I hope the staff is able to serve these children with sympathetic understanding and take care of their needs holistically.”

Some parts of our bodies that seem less important are actually as important because every part of the body must work together as a whole to successfully function. Your part is absolutely key to our child welfare services in Qinghai. Please support us today and let the orphans and children with disabilities know that you care.
