Internship Opportunities for the Disabled
I am happy to welcome Wing Chun to Christian Action as our Green Connect intern. Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation referred her to our Social Enterprise Department (SED) through their internship programme.
Wing Chun was born with a motor disability that limits her body function on her left side. For the first 14 years of her life, she suffered from epilepsy caused by a brain aneurysm. She was often hospitalised and wasn’t able to attend school. Miraculously, the aneurysm dissolved by itself and Wing Chun could finally start to live a normal and meaningful life.
Ten years ago, a social worker helped Wing Chun find a job as a receptionist at a blind massage parlour. She handled the money and booked appointments at the parlor until COVID-19 hit the city. The business was forced to close down. Unemployment made Wing Chun feel that she was wasting her time. She wanted to be useful!
I thank God that Christian Action could offer an SED internship to this motivated and hard-working woman. Wing Chun helps our staff at the SED warehouse with sorting, labelling and packing donated items for our community sales outlets. She has adapted well to the work culture and is always happy to help our staff in any way.
Wing Chun said, “I’m very happy to meet new friends and learn about the daily operations of SED. Everyone accepts me and my disabilities and treats me with kindness and love.” I am proud to see our staff display the love of God to Wing Chun.
After the internship, Wing Chun hopes to find a full-time job and continue to explore and learn more skills. It’s not easy for someone with disabilities and a low education level to find work. God is loving and powerful, so let’s pray for the Lord to provide Wing Chun with the perfect job!
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10
