Children Are Our Future
"My family and I came to Hong Kong when I was 10. I had a really hard time studying and talking with my classmates because everything was in Cantonese. I struggled to catch up and was always behind with my schoolwork.” - CA student Hin (real name withheld to protect his identity).
At Christian Action, we firmly believe that education is the key to helping individuals develop self-reliance and break free from poverty. That's why we are committed to supporting the educational needs of the families we serve.
On February 8th, 2023, we held the second Christian Action Scholarship for Excellence (CASE) award ceremony to recognize 18 of our promising young students for their academic excellence and for triumphing over tremendous adversity.
The students, who are from our On Tai Service Centre, Long Ping Service Centre and the Centre for Refugees, performed at such a high level in their Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) that all of them were accepted into their chosen universities!
During the ceremony each recipient was awarded their scholarship by Christian Action board member Dr. Yue Kwok To, and Mrs. Drina Yue, board member of Christian Action Asia and students were given an opportunity to share a little of their story.
One of our students, Hin (not his real name) spoke of the challenges of moving to Hong Kong when he didn’t know the language. Rather than giving up, he immersed himself in Cantonese videos and listening to Cantonese songs in order to educate himself.
Hin's family has been a service user of Christian Action since 2014, and he credits our staff members for taking good care of them and providing them with strong support and encouragement. Hin also joined our tutorial class to prepare for the DSE and spoke of his indebtedness to the volunteer teachers.
Hin's dream is to study mathematics and work in the technology industry after graduation. He plans to use his scholarship funds to buy a good laptop computer. He describes Christian Action as his second home, where he can always find friends to talk to. He promised to study hard to repay everyone's kindness!
