Empowering Ethnic Minority Children Together!

Two months ago the children in our Ethnic Minorities Programme received a very special treat courtesy of 20 volunteers from the Education Bureau. The volunteers treated the children to free STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) classes, and it was huge hit.

Hong Kong’s ethnic minority community has been mired in poverty for generations. Many do not understand Chinese and consequently have difficulty integrating into the local community. As a result they are often unable to get gainful employment and are stuck with low-paying manual labour jobs, which is why Christian Action provides a range of support services for underprivileged ethnic minorities, including language courses and After-school Child Care.

The STEAM classes represented a rare opportunity for our kids. The hands-on activities ranged from building a simulated house using 4D straw blocks to learning how to make mechanical animals! The volunteers also shared the meaning of Chinese idioms through storytelling, to help the children learn Chinese. The class was filled with laughter and excitement, and the children expressed their enjoyment of the activities.

I am grateful to Dr. Choi Yuk-lin, JP, Secretary for Education, and the volunteers from the Education Bureau Volunteer Team, for providing valuable information to these underprivileged ethnic minority children and showing them some love from society. May God continue to bless these children, and may more government departments, organizations, and individuals join us in providing opportunities and hope for their future.
