The Parable of the Sheep that Went Missing
How do you help someone in need? I have often been asked that question. It is usually worded something like: “I saw a homeless person recently and I wanted to help but I didn’t know what to do!”
It’s not always the homeless. Sometimes people mention someone who is unemployed (or underemployed), a person who has been abused, discriminated against, is an immigrant, elderly, lonely or hungry. And they genuinely want advice and may need interim support!
At Christian Action we’re constantly, and deliberately, asking the same question of ourselves. Our best programs address the question of ‘how’ with a well planned delivery of services that preferably includes multiple partners and (as a result), that yields life changing growth for those we serve.
Our Child Development Fund (CDF) programme helps children break free from intergenerational poverty. It couples select children and their parents, with corporate and/or private donors, the Government, ourselves and our volunteer mentors! The results of this partnership have been remarkable!
Ching, for example, was a young child who we recently helped. Her volunteer Mentor, Linda, quickly noticed Ching's numerous personality challenges and worked hard at helping her develop relationship skills with those around her. Their story serves to remind me that God designed us all to be part of this wonderful 'flock' that we call Hong Kong's community!
Today, Linda and Ching still share daily trivia and interests over WhatsApp. Ching is now a more mature, happier person with a clearer idea of what she wants to do in the future. And because of a special bank savings program, whereby the Government contributes funds, along with additional funds from Corporate and / or private donors over the course of 2years, Ching is on track to graduate from the program with considerable bank savings!
