Summertime

Ah summer! - vacations, long weekends, the beach, outdoor restaurants with friends in the cool of the evening, the sound of ice-cubes clinking in a glass. There’s laughter, nourishment of body and spirits, maybe even wonder and joy - and a newfound perspective on life? What do all of these have in common, they are times of refreshment; for us parents and our children, they are the building blocks of some of life’s happiest memories!

At Christian Action we’re doing our utmost to bring times of refreshment to some of Hong Kong’s most disadvantaged children. For them there is no vacation, weekend escape and in many cases not even a trip to the beach or a memorable restaurant meal. Which is why the children get so excited and cherish the memory of events we can put on for them.

One recent event was a board games competition, that was held at Carmel Alison Lam Primary School on July 8th 2023. Similar to the increasingly popular science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) competitions, this event challenged the students to use their problem-solving skills, and the kids loved it!

We had 40 participants from our Child Development Fund at the tournament. They competed in teams for five board games: Flix and Mix, Stick Stack, Memory Concentration, Mental Arithmetic, and Words Guessing Game. It was a thrilling, action-packed inter-team contest and the team with the most total points was declared the winner!

This event was absolutely thrilling for the children. What made it even more stimulating was ‘The Fun Zone’, which was an additional classroom that was also chock-full of problem-solving type board games for the children to play, when they weren’t competing.

This event, like almost everything else we do for the community, was made possible by partners and volunteers like you. On this occasion there were sixty-five volunteers, ten co-workers from Christian Action, and 10 members of the organizing committee on duty to man the gaming sites!
