A New View of HK
Free tickets to visit Ocean Park or Disneyland are one of those opportunities that cause great excitement among our students, but this summer we provided something a little different for them. When we partnered with the Kwong Wah Group Holdings Ltd and Glory Channel Limited for the 'Kids Love Hong Kong Art Campaign', the students discovered real places far more intriguing than the fantasy world of Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh...
Over a period of three days, the budding young artists spent part of their time photographing famous landmarks depicting Hong Kong’s Culture and Character – the programme’s theme. Later in the studio they used their photographs to create over 70 landscapes, three dimensional cards and sculptures.
One of the primary six students is Yee, who dreams of being an artist one day. Her family has no money to spare for art supplies, so Yee saves her HK$10 a week pocket money to buy art supplies so that she can practice her art.
After the workshop she told us, "It was a rare opportunity to learn things about art that they don’t teach you in school. It was a lot of fun, and I learnt many new and interesting things, about art, and Hong Kong culture and places. I hope I can do this again." Yee's mother regrets that they can't afford art lessons for Yee, and hopes there will be more of these initiatives to develop her daughter’s talent.
We are exhibiting the art work produced by the students at Tuen Mun Town Plaza from October 23rd to 31st, 2013 and at Island Resort Mall from November 1st to 11th, 2013.
Besides encouraging the students, we also want to raise awareness among the community of the need for personal growth and development opportunities among children and youth whose families lack the resources to invest in their talents. I am sure this isn’t just true in Hong Kong, and that the same applies in the city where you live too!
I’ll be at the exhibition’s opening ceremony on October 26th at 12pm. It would be great if you could come along to support the children - I hope to see you there!
